ALERT [CODE 2]: PGCPS Remote Learning Day Due to Post-Snow Road Conditions - February 4, 2026

February 3, 2026

Good afternoon Prince George Families,

Due to continued ice-covered roads in areas of the county, and the potential of further winter weather around dismissal, Prince George County Public Schools will have a Remote Learning Day tomorrow, Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Students will complete assignments provided by their teacher(s) previously as part of the Remote Learning Day. Instructional staff should follow their Remote Learning Day procedures and expectations.

All other employees, use CODE 2: 12-month nonessential personnel report at 10:00 A.M. and dismiss at 4:00 P.M. Essential Personnel report at 9:00 A.M. to prepare the school campuses and fleet for operation with release at 3:00 P.M. No other personnel report for Code 2.

  • Note: Essential Personnel are all 12-month contracted personnel in the Maintenance, Custodial and Fleet Services departments.

I understand this time has been challenging for our families as we continue to recover from January's significant winter storm.

As I said throughout the winter, the safety of our students, staff, and families is at the forefront of every decision we make regarding school operations. Despite the uptick in temperature allowing for helpful ice melting this week, some of our roads, especially in tree-shaded areas, remain coated in ice, even days after this weather event.

While many of our primary roads, like U.S. Route 460, Route 156, or Route 10 are largely clear, there are many areas of roads along shade-covered secondary roads and neighborhood streets that have significant patches of ice. When these conditions exist, where roads appear clear, then ice remains accumulated on other stretches of the road, this creates significant safety concerns.

These decisions are not made lightly, and are focused on the specific circumstances of our community, rather than those of neighboring localities. We are hopeful this week's positive temperature trends and continued work from local crews can clear the remaining ice from our roads.

For additional information about remote learning days and student learning, refer to the following information:

How a Remote Learning Day Works

  • Grades Pre-K-3: Students in these grades will receive paper packets prior to leaving school before an expected remote learning day. The students are expected to complete their packet and return it to their teacher upon completion once school reopens.
    • Teachers will hold office hours from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the remote learning day where they will be accessible via email to answer questions and provide support for students.
  • Grades 4-12: Students in these grades will complete the work they downloaded to their Chromebook while at school prior to the remote learning day during this time. Students will have to submit their completed remote learning day assignments within seven (7) school days to their teacher(s).
    • Teachers will be available virtually via Google Classroom to answer questions and provide support for students during the remote learning day from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In addition, learning specialists, elementary (Pre-K-5) resource teachers, related service providers, and school counselors will hold office hours from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the remote learning day where they will be accessible via email to answer questions and provide support for students.

Students will have up to seven (7) school days after returning to campus to submit work from the Remote Learning Day, and assignments will be graded for correctness. Teachers will continue to support students by answering questions and helping them complete any unfinished work once school is back in session, and students with disabilities will receive any needed make-up services. As a reminder, on Remote Learning Days, teachers are available for support through scheduled virtual office hours, Google Meet sessions, and email to provide clarity, instruction, and support for students.

As I have said throughout before and after this storm, we will always act in the interest of safety, and I appreciate your patience as we move to bring students back to school safely.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wayne Lyle
Superintendent
Prince George County Public Schools
